The Today Series by On Kawara

On Kawara is a Japanese conceptual artist. He started painting the date of each day back in January 1966, and continued it till his death in 2014. The paintings are hand-painted meticulously, with markings unique for that day. There would be differences in the format of the Date, font size, font type, depending on what he experienced on that day and where he was.

For each Date painting, he prepared a box and placed inside a cut-out headline of the news that day. Besides, he also kept a journal to record each of the Date painting in sequential order, indicating the size of the painting, the color and the news headline. As for the paintings he did not complete on the day it was painted, he would discard them.

The poem to me is one such moment-space-event-subject. Marked/cut-out
